The above message was sent to Panera's Customer Service Peeps via their website.

Three days later I got what looked like a boilerplate reply from Customer Service explaining to me that they occasionally run out of bread.

Yes, I know that, - and made mention of it in my message - but why THREE stores ran out of the same product on the same day was not addressed, nor was I offered anything for my trouble, nor did they say that they would contact the store.

In fact, they did not offer anything but a redundant explanation and a lame and valueless apology.

Apparently these folks believe that Customer Service is about telling the customer "Sorry, but hard luck"

"Bah" does not even begin to cover it.

Sounds like a good idea... but it has two minor flaws.

Firstly, here in the US we have this thing called the Constitution, in which Congress is empowered <I><B>"To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries"</B></I>. I'm not sure how "limited" can me interpreted as "the rest of your life".

Secondly, such a law would reward longer-lived artists such as Cliff. Why should he get fifty years of royalties on his songs, while Buddy Holly and Jimi Hendrix do not?

Does anyone else get lifetime earnings? If not, why should they? I would rather see a guaranteed ten or fifteen-year royalty going to the next of kin.

Why not just allow royalties to continue until the original artist's death?

Postscript: After closing the account and paying the exact amount owing, I got another statement informing me that I owed them 45c in finance charges.

Credit where it is due, they waived that charge when I phoned them and asked nicely... but it occurs to me that it probably cost them more than 45c to mail out the statement.

I was reading today on digg (and other places) that Microsoft's new Zune player doesn't even work with Microsoft's DRM. Only content bought from Microsoft for the Zune plays on the Zune. Look's like Microsoft is taking from Apple's playbook here. Not really a bad thing but maybe they should have made their mind up from the start.
